碩士 / 國立中正大學 / 台灣文學研究所 / 100 / Jade Y. Chen is a famous novelist in Taiwan, who also is a productive writer in the field of literature and drama. Chen studied drama at university. After finishing her studies, Chen dedicated herself to Taiwan’s theatres. Chen has attempted to convert literature into plays by adapting foreign literary works into plays.
Chen successfully adapted “Notice from a Bachelorette” to a drama, which was performed by Ping-Fong Acting Troupe in 1993 and it was well-received by the public. In 2009, Chen rewrote “Mazu’s Bodyguards” into a play which combined Western and Oriental cultural characteristics.
Discussing Chen’s adapted plays, there are mutual effects between Chen’s literary works and plays by transforming literature into visual images.
Chen’s literary works and the presentation of plays are compatible for each other by using the elements of theater to enhance the story of works, this paper will show. we will also discuss the designation of the stage, the arrangement of characters and the deconstruction of the story.
