Dubbing Translation for Children’s Cartoons: The Case of SpongeBob SquarePants / 兒童卡通配音翻譯之探討─以《海綿寶寶》為例

碩士 / 輔仁大學 / 跨文化研究所翻譯學碩士班 / 101 / This study attempts to explore the translation strategies and phenomena of dubbing translation for children’s cartoons. Children’s cartoons are audiovisual texts that mainly target children audience; therefore, when translating, the translators not only have to conform to dubbing requirements by matching the translated dialogues with the motion pictures and with the length of the original dialogues, but also have to take into account children’s linguistic ability and cultural experiences. In consideration of the constraints, the translation approaches applied for dubbed cartoons to achieve the function of entertaining the audience are worth investigating. Moreover, dubbing translation for cartoons usually involves a huge proportion of creative adaptation, and the factors that result in this translational phenomenon are also worth examining. The American cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants is chosen to serve as a case for the research, since the original script not only contains lots of content that is specifically related to American culture, but also adopts different rhetorical devices intended for humorous effects, and thus poses a great challenge for translators.
With reference to theories related to children’s literature, dubbing translation, and Skopos theories, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the original and the translated scripts of SpongeBob SquarePants through three perspectives, including the needs of the children audience, the limitations of media, and the humorous effects of cartoons. The aim is to observe the difficulties in the translation process and the factors that affect the translator’s decisions on adopting different strategies.
It is concluded that in order to satisfy the demands of the children audience, to be confined to the dubbing limitations, and to achieve humorous effects, translators need to be more flexible in applying strategies, and sometimes, when necessary, even have to adapt the content and thereby make it completely different than that of the original one. In addition, translators should also strive to achieve functional equivalence between the original and the translated scripts at the text level, rather than the word or sentence level, so as to represent the style and characteristics of the original scripts.
