The Efficacy of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Group for Patients with Mild Alzheimer’s Disease: A Pilot Study / 團體式認知刺激治療對輕度阿茲海默氏失智症患者成效之初探

碩士 / 高雄醫學大學 / 心理學系碩士班 / 101 / Objective: As Taiwan faces an expansion of its aging population, the escalating burden of dementia poses many challenges to individuals, family members and the healthcare system. Several studies showed that the major risk for dementia is age.Hence, the dementia related issues has been attracted attention increasingly. Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological disorder with deteriorate progressively. The previous researches have reported that non-pharmacological intervention could benefit for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, cognitive training on those patients has been emphasized all over the world recently. This study aimed to explore the efficacy of cognitive stimulation therapy in Chinese version for patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, the clinical assistance and educational information were provided to doctors and caregivers respectively .
Methods: The study was one group pretest-posttest design.10 patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease who were diagnosed by a doctor of neurology from the medical center of south Taiwan(CDR=0.5,1) were recruited. They attended weekly cognitive stimulation therapy group for seven weeks. Using the Clinical Dementia Rating(CDR), Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognition(ADAS-Cog),Geriatric Depression Scale(GDS),Quality of Life- Alzheimer’s Disease Scale (QoL-AD) as measuring tools. Subjects were evaluated before and after the intervention.
Results: After attending the cognitive stimulation therapy group, patients were noted to have statistically significant improved on the ADAS-Cog
(p=.007),especially on words recall(p=.039),following commands (p=.038), naming(p=.046),and orientation(p=.014) subscale. There were no significant effect on depression and quality of life, but there were lower GDS scores and higher QoL-AD scores.
Conclusions: The results showed that cognitive stimulation therapy group may have worthwhile benefits on cognitive function for people with mild dementia. Future research needs to have larger sample size and follow-up on its long-term effect. However, the findings of this pilot study can be a reference for the intervention of Alzheimer''s disease.
