碩士 / 高雄醫學大學 / 醫學系神經學科碩士班 / 101 / The efficacy of music therapy (MT) on cognition, sleep and quality of life in dementia had yet to be confirmed, so we conducted two studies to understand. We included mild Alzheimer''s disease outpatients, voluntarily divided into MT and control groups. In the first study included 41 cases (20 in MT group), and western classic MT for six months was intervened. The second study included 30 cases (17 in MT group), and a three-month medical resonance therapy music was intervened. Assessments included: Cognitive Abilities screening Instrument、Neuropsychiatric Inventory、Chinese Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s disease, and Screen for Caregiver Burden. The results were found in the 1st study that a significant improvement of abstraction in MT group; no significant differences in other assessments. In the 2nd study, a significant promotion of quality of life in MT group was noted; no significant differences in other assessments. The studies conclude that a six-month western classic MT is an effective treatment for dementia on abstraction. The three-month medical resonance therapy music shows significant efficacy on quality of life in dementia. Suggestions for future research are to design more rigorous and long-term MT programs to confirm its more effects as a complementary therapy of dementia.
