碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 海洋科技與事務研究所 / 101 / The increasingly vulnerable western coast in Taiwan forced by human development has been recognized. The rising of public awareness in the environmental protection and the implementation of government policy therefore spreading the artificial mangrove planting and restoration in western coast of Taiwan, but lack of management makes the coastal environment suffering the decrease of biodiversity and obstruction of river discharge in the estuary. Nowadays, the expansion of mangrove habitat limits the habitat of other species, such birds and crabs. Species and biodiversity are singularized, it thus reducing the population of bird and other species in the estuary.
This study explores direction of the mangroves management for the western coast in Taiwan based on a case study area in Hsinchu City Costal Wildlife Refuge. The original bare mudflats have been covered by mangroves over the past decades, where the habitat becomes homogenous and landform. We suggested that appropriate replacing original bare mudflats could improve the biodiversity by clearing mangroves in the habitat. The policy of mangrove management was not integrated in Taiwan's western coastal area from the literature review. The long-term monitoring data and laws were lacked in the mangroves region. The Study suggests that the development plan of mangroves management is able to effectively monitor the growth of mangroves in the western coast of Taiwan. 5 major issues are suggested for the mangroves management: 1. Biodiversity of benthic species, 2. Variation of sediment grain size, 3. Distribution of bird’s feeding ground, 4. Surveillance of mangroves coverage, and 5. Effects of human activities. To improving the mangrove management needs not only the financial support from the government, but also the cooperation with academic institutions, environmental groups, and communities.
