A study of spatial characteristics from the viewpoint of Transit-Oriented Development ─ A case study of Taipei City / 大眾運輸導向發展觀點下空間特性之研究─以台北市為例

碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 都市計劃學系碩博士班 / 101 / New Urbanism emphasizes on the importance of human-scale neighborhood units, mixed land uses, and the integration of convenient transportation systems. The purpose of this scheme is to create a new urban environment that satisfies the needs of housing, shopping, working, entertainments, and other daily tasks within walking distance. Transit-Oriented Development (T.O.D.) is one of the practices of New Urbanism; it focuses on the spatial characteristics of land use and public space configuration. Through the design principles of human-scale and walkable environment , it wishes to guide local development and connection by public transport systems, and want to use this principles to restore the traditional neighborhood relationships and enhance the vitality of the whole city.

In able to implement T.O.D. strategy in a developed area, planners need to investigate where good - walkable environment is at. Under this condition, people will be more willing to travel to their destinations by walking, while the area around the station or adjacent to the station, and with the higher willingness to walk, T.O.D. strategy have been practiced possibly. Hence, this thesis establishes Network Analysis Model by GIS software ArcGIS to calculate individual mixed-use index, for viewing the change of their spatial pattern, to point out where good - walkable environment is at, and use the index to assist the evaluation of spatial characteristics in T.O.D. surrounding area.

In this research, the study area is Taipei City, and there are two main conclusions : first, the index by this research compared with previous method is better reflecting the accessibility of road network linkage situation. And by the viewpoint of T.O.D. spatial characteristics, we can use the index to know where good - walkable environment is at and can satisfy our living requirements. Second, when we consider the movement structure of a single-network (street network) or dual-network (street and MRT network), it is actually deferent from the mixed-use patterns by two movement structures, which means that indeed affects the accessibility of activities due to the public transport network. This analysis method can help decision-makers to understand the spatial characteristics ,and do the proper adjustment and modification to the the T.O.D. strategy. Furthermore, hope this index can be discussed with other indicators of socio-economic characteristics for comparison, such as housing price, traffic flow, etc.,in order to apply this research to the real world.
