碩士 / 國立成功大學 / 政治經濟學研究所專班 / 101 / Prostitution has existed in human society since ancient times, but the perceptions and attitudes to them are different from the past; based on the considerations of political and economic situation as well as public opinion, rulers have different policies and management methods. Under the community power structure, sex industry and sex workers that are like dark shadows survive with marginalization in society. Sexual, moral and suffering parts of sex trade are magnified; nevertheless, the impact of other associated aspects is ignored. For instance, the sex work involves labor and economic oriented views, the different idea of distinct generations with the interaction of social change. Indeed, the business model of sex industry reflects changes in the social structure including the tolerance of sub-culture issues. When we face a large and complicated social structural organization, not only focus on the analysis of society top level for our research, can be more close to the bottom to understand pressures and problems of structural changes as listening to disadvantaged minority.
Shanghai, known as the Oriental Pearl since one century ago, even though it is the most modern, open, progressive and well developed city in China, sexual workers and industry are given in different definitions in the eyes of Shanghai. In legal, frontier of social structure are still placed they; in real life, erotic entertainment gradually becomes the most distinctive part with indicative meaning of leisure and entertainment in the city. The particular industry establishes both network and power structure having a great relevance with urbanization progress. According to literatures reference, data collection, and depth interview with related staffs, this research illustrates the employment situation and social relation of sex workers, as well as further analyzes the social structure variation of modern Shanghai, change of personal value, and reciprocal effect of urbanization and social life.
According to the aforementioned via relevant analysis, the conclusion which synthesizes Interpersonal reactions and power relations in workplace points out four characteristics of sex workers in Shanghai Xuhui district: First, they are young sex workers having high mobility and high education background; Second, they are positive practitioners who exhibit an active, free and strong objective attitude at work; Third, they are vulnerable minority at social, gender and employment structure phases in the social relation construction; Fourth, they are loners with switching identity whose personal social networks is marginalized and closed. Because of association between the sex industry development and social change in Shanghai, we unearth that Shanghai's employment structure influence on the development sex industry; policies how the law agencies enforce affect the sex industry business model; finally the sex industry and corresponding practitioners develop a survival strategy to cope with the social status and power structure.
