The case study of Er-Long dragon boat race in Jiaosi, Yilan
Abstract
This research discusses the historical meaning of traditional body culture and the major changing factor as time went by. According to the legend, the dragon boat race in Er-Long village has been held for more than two hundred years. This activity is obviously different from the dragon boat races in southern parts of China and other cities of Taiwan in various aspects including boat, ceremony, rules and cultural scale. This research applies literature analysis and interviews to investigate the social historical meaning and content transition of Er-Long boat race before it contacted with the modern civilization a hundred years ago, Japanese colonial period, KMT regime, Post-Martial Law Period till early twenty-first century. It aims to discuss the sportization process of traditional body culture and the traditionalization factors during the process. Applying observation, interviews and historic sociology method, it helps to realize the cultural meaning of Er-Long boat race from its start till now. The research reveals that the Er-Long boat race provides West modern sports with an alternative annotation of “fair competition.” The Er-Long boat race not only tightly connects with colonial domination, national control and the development of Taiwan sports, but also reflects the outward migration among traditional group, environmental changes in the context of rural urbanization; meanwhile, it represents the complex negotiation of social interaction and gender relational changes. This research also provides theoretical reflection on the problem consciousness of “traditional sports”, and the “traditionalization” and “sportization” of body culture.
