Distribution of Heavy Metals in Sediments of River Basin and Estuary of Love River, Kaohsiung, Taiwan / 高雄愛河及河口域沉積物重金屬分佈研究

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 海洋環境工程研究所 / 101 / Love River is a crucial river in Kaohsiung. Along its river bank, the tourism, economic, and humanity activities are prosperous, and many factories or industrial district are located in this area. As a result, it caused many pollutants discharged into Love River and affecting the aquatic ecosystems and damage people’s health. This study mainly used field sampling and monitoring method to analyze the sediment physical and chemical properties in Love River, and observe it to get a better idea about the status of sediment concentration distribution of heavy metals, enrichment, and the cumulative extent and the potential impact on aquatic ecosystems. The sampling points include region 10 stations (L1-L10) from the main watershed to the estuary from the upstream in Love River and 5 stations (R1-R5) from the estuaries to Kaohsiung first port. The sampling time were on October, 2011, and July, 2012, analyzing the total amount of heavy metal (Hg, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, Al), organic matter, total fat, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, particle size analysis, heavy metal bonding patterns (exchangeable form, carbonate bonding form, iron and manganese oxide bonding form, organic bonding form, residual form) and different particle size of the heavy metal concentration.
The results indicate that the heavy metal concentrations of Love River and its estuary sediment were between <0.01 mg / kg (Cd) to 2,720 mg / kg (Zn). The distribution of heavy metals in different particle sizes, the smaller the particle shows higher concentrations. Bonding form of heavy metal, Hg in residual form had the highest content percentage (68.1±15.4%), indicates Hg without mobility, while the percent of other heavy metals in phase were between 100±0%(Cd)~84.6±7.80%(Cr). Enrichment factor (EF) indicates that Hg (EF = 57±46), Pb (EF = 4.5±2.1), Cd (EF = 4.3±3.2), Cu (EF = 3.1±1.8) and Zn (EF = 15±11) with enrichment (EF> 1), these heavy metals were generated by human activities. However, Cr, Ni and Mn are not enrichment (EF <1). Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) analysis shows that Hg have extremely polluted (Igeo = 4.5±1.3), Zn have moderate to strongly polluted (Igeo = 2.6±1.2), Pb, Cd and Cu have unpolluted to moderately polluted (Igeo = 0.3-0.8), Cr, Ni and Mn have unpolluted (Igeo<0). Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and mean-ERM-quotiet (m-ERM-q) indicate Hg, Cu and Zn in Love River have high potential toxicity. The potential toxicity probability of the River Basin is (46%) higher than Estuary (30%). Potential ecological risk index (PERI) assessment results show that heavy metal of River Basin and estuarine sediment are in very serious potential ecological risk level. However, Hg is the major metal (90%) that caused this risk.
