The harm reduction programs recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) are believed to reduce the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the intravenous drug users (IDU). Harm reduction and methadone maintenance treatment are national prevention policies in many countries. Except reducing the social problems and blood diseases, these polices could give the users better quality of life. The brief version of World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) was used to investigate the effect of methadone maintenance treatment to the heroin dependent patients. Participants included 51 patients from a hospital in Taipei. They were asked to fill in the WHOQOL-BREF in the first day and one month after drinking methadone. The mean scores of the WHOQOL-BREF before-and after drinking methadone were tested by the paired t-test. The WHOQOL-BREF’s full (t = 2.39), the overall quality of life (t = 2.14), physical health domain (t = 2.77), and social relationship domain (t = 2.26) achieved the significant values, showing that the participants could benefit from the methadone maintenance treatment and improve their quality of life.
