The thought, attitude and moral qualities of characters of the model essays embody mainstream social cultures, lead value orientation, affect pupils’ concept of the world and their way of thinking and expressing, and thus plays an important role in shaping their values and developing their personality.
This research, using content analysis, aims to discuss main characters in model essays of language textbooks, analyze and compare outer and inner image of main characters sampled from 1st to 5th grade language textbooks that Shanghai Education Press publishes, and then observe techniques of description from the angle of literary writing.
This research finds that Shanghai Education Press selects abundant and multiple characters. Except traditional moral values, their characters also display active, pioneering, science-advocating and confident images that stick to personal principles. Moreover, the multiple writing techniques of authors of Shanghai Education Press make language textbooks more lively, readable and student-centered. It provides a good demonstration for pupils’ writing.
