Cultural and Creative Industry Clusters: The Comparative Case Studies of Jiufen in Taipei and Tian Zi Fang in Shanghai / 文化創意產業聚落研究: 以臺北九份與上海田子坊為例

碩士 / 國立臺灣師範大學 / 表演藝術研究所 / 101 / As one place transformed from mineshaft ruins and idle factories to international tourist attractions, another sprouted from foreign artists-in-residence and local culture to established cultural clusters. The cultural landscapes, alley aesthetics, and artistic movements of Taipei Jiufen and Shanghai Tian Zi Fang can be characterized by the concept of Organic Growth, which indicates the spontaneous “growth” of cultural patterns in these two places. With neither government-subsidized funding nor corporate investment, they are spaces developed from a humanist vision that pursues the real beauty of life and arts. Jiufen and Tian Zi Fang have changed the artistic industry itself, bringing new life and energy to the local, and have become the landmarks of Taipei and Shanghai.

Cultural and creative industry cannot be simply characterized by traditional commercial activity. Rather, it is grounded by culture and incorporates creativity to add values to the product, but also enhances the connection between the consumer and product through stories. Its dominance in commerce and creative inspiration (e.g. for alternative modes of operation and entrepreneurship) as well as its social significance (e.g. cultural reconstruction) has gradually increased with the integration of cultural resources. While most institutions rely on government policy to support their enterprise territory, Jiufen and Tian Zi Fang have organically developed their own cultural and artistic styles through localization, which can be great examples for the industry as a whole.

This study aims to examine the values of cultural and creative industry clusters through five major dimensions: space, cohesion, creative-artistry, “LOHAS”, and travel, and compare the historical contexts in which the cultural and creative industries in Taipei Jiufen and Shanghai Tian Zi Fang have developed. It will also discuss the influences of cultural tourism in these two cities.
