Rapid growth waves off the coast of Penghu / 澎湖海域急速成長波浪之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 海洋環境資訊學系 / 101 / Abstract
Sudden increase of wave height in a short time period can be dangerous to small coastal fishery boats. This study investigated the rapid growth waves (RGW) events occurred in the sea off the Penghu Island by analyzing the wave and meteorological information measured by the wave buoy operated by the Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs. The rapid growth waves were defined as waves with significant wave height not only increased more than two times and also grew to higher than 1.5 m in 6 hours. There were 490 RGW events identified for the period between 2007 and 2012. Analyzing these events, this study found the following results:
1. Most of the rapid growth wave events in Penghu have occurred in the fall season, having 172 events. There were 151 and 135 events occurred in the spring and winter respectively. The summer season has the least number, only 32.
2. The main weather systems associated with the RGW events was the cold continental high pressure. There were 247 events caused by the passage of these high pressure systems. Another 124 events were associated with the passage of cold meteorological fronts accompanied by a cold continental high.
3. On the average (over the all events), the wind speed did not vary much at two hours before the occurrence of the RGW events. However, at two hours after the occurence of the RGW events, the wind speed increased quickly. Moreover, right before and after the start of the growth, the wind direction was mostly from the NNE. However, after the start of the RGW events, the percentage of the wind from the NNE direction increased. As to the atmospheric pressure, it did not change much before and after the occurrence of the RGW events. In addition, the wave period was found to decrease before the wave growth, and then increased after the occurrence of the events.
4. When compared the RGW events in the sea near the Penghu Island with that occurred near the Hsinchu coast, it was found that under the same weather system the wave height in the RGW event occurred in Hsinchu was less than that of Penghu.
5. One significant feature of the RGW events in Penghu is that there were numerous chain events of RGW. It was found that there were 179 events with time period between the occurrences of two events less than 24 hours.
