An Analysis of Developmental Trends on the Enlargement of World Containership / 全球貨櫃船舶大型化發展趨勢之分析

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 航運管理學系 / 101 / The growth of world trade encourage demands for container transportation along with advances in shipbuilding technology, causing enlargement in sizes of containerships in order to enable shipping lines to reduce operating costs to gain the benefits of the economies of scale. Among the many factors influencing shipping market and freight rates, the supply of capacity and demand of cargoes, according to the principles of supply and demand in economics, are the key factors. This paper uses the statistics from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Containerisation International (CI) with the historical structural approach to analyze the development of supply and demand of container shipping market, focuses on the growth and current statuses of the containership supply in 2000-2012, and discuss the developmental trends on enlargement of world containerships. Then discuss the influence of the global financial crisis (2008) on the supply of container shipping market. The results show as below:
1. In point of historical evolution, the demand of cargo transportation is deeply affected by global economic. Container fleet had significant growth in both the number of vessels and supply of TEU capacity. The TEU capacity growth rate was much larger than the growth rate of the number of vessels. After the global financial crisis in 2008, the developmental trend on the enlargement of world containership became even more obvious.
2. In point of structure analyzing, ships capacity above 5,000 TEUs increase rapidly and observably in the global container shipping market, which led to the enlargement of the overall container fleet and the continuing of enlargement. The gradually centralization of supply of capacity led to the M-shape of both the structure of fleet types as well as the container shipping lines.
These findings can provide as a good reference for the container shipping lines in making operational strategies, and government authorities in formulating supportive shipping policies.
