The purpose of this study aims to explore the business strategies of near sea container liners when faced with the financial crisis in 2008. It observes near sea container liners’ operation environment and tries to formulate what kind of strategies can be adopted to overcome the impact of the financial crisis, as well as how to enhance their business efficiency, including risk management strategies, cost control strategies, finance measures, market strategies. While undertaking this study, the researcher adopts certain theories for analyzing the business environment after the financial crisis, including SWOT, driving force for competitiveness analysis, product life cycle analysis, BCG matrix, etc.
The main findings of this study are as following: (1) For risk management strategies, it is suggested to adopt cost control strategies, business revenue management strategies, market and credit alert measures, and financial risk control strategies; (2) For enhancing business efficiency strategies, it is suggested to adopt cost-leadership strategies, differentiation strategies, and focus strategies. In order to materialize the above strategies, the critical measures are: to adopt defensive, cost-leadership, and market risk control strategies for cost control benefit and secure first class customer’s support. It also suggests that near sea container liners need to focus their efforts on Taiwan/South China feeder shipping line in order to provide qualified services to their important customers.
Finally it has been proved that the observed company has obtained better performance during post financial crisis period because it can integrate its staff and relevant resources to provide seamless service.
