A spatial-temporal analysis of the distribution of cetaceans in coastal waters of Hualien, Taiwan / 花蓮海域鯨豚的時空分布之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 環境生物與漁業科學學系 / 101 / Abstract
For the purpose of understanding the species, distribution, habitat features of cetaceans off the Hualien coast of Taiwan and the impacts caused by whale-watching boats, the study analyzed the data collected by whale-watching boats of Kuroshio Ocean Education Foundation (KOEF) during 1998-2008, and the results could be summarized as followed:
1. The cetaceans identified in Hualien waters could be
categorized as 13 families or 14 species. Mixed species
interactions could be observed in 9 species of them. The
mixed species relations of Lagenodelphis hosei and
Grampus griseus could be described as highly dependent.
2. The range of water temperature and the range of distance
from the coast are both broader when the sightings rate
of the species is higher.
3. Both groups and group sizes with the mother and calf
pairs among top 5 species of sightings rate, which
include Stenella longirostris, Grampus griseus, Stenella
attenuata, Lagenodelphis hosei and Tursiops truncatus,
are smaller than that without the mother and calf pairs.
The average distance from the coast that the groups with
the mother and calf pairs maintain is shorter than that
without the mother and calf pairs among top 5 species of
sightings rate except Grampus griseus.
4. The number of whale-watching boats and the discovery
rate, sightings rate, SPUE (sight per unit effort) and
average distance from the coast of cetaceans are
negatively correlated, indicating that the impact is
larger when the number of whale-watching boats is higher.
5. The sightings rates of Stenella longirostris and
Stenella attenuata varied from year to year and they
fluctuated in response to each other.
6. The sightings rate of Grampus griseus declined obviously
after 1999 when whale-watching boats increased, and
reached it's lowest point in 2005. It began to rise
again in 2006 when the number of whale- watching boats
reduced by one.
7. The sightings rate of Stenella longirostris did not
change significantly in the area where disturbance
caused by whale-watching boat activities was stronger
while activity scope of other cetaceans changed to avoid
whale-watching boats.
8. The data concerning cetaceans should be collected and
preserved to promote scientifically evidence-based
resources preservation and improve the whale-watching
activity management.
