碩士 / 國立臺東大學 / 體育學系碩士班 / 100 / This research is intended to examine the issues confronted by colleges and universities in their teaching of open water diving courses, design of the course and course implementation and results. Five male students and five female students with basic swimming skills from the department of physical education of the university were the research subjects who had never received open water diving training. Interview records, teaching logs, learning logs and observation records of the training curriculum program were collected during the research. The collected data were subsequently analyzed and evaluated from the perspective of the observer, coaches and teaching assistants. The research results are as follows: 1. At present, when colleges and universities offer diving courses, teachers will set up the enrollment threshold based on the nature of the course. Skin diving will be first introduced before the course begins. The common mistakes of students are putting diving fins on the wrong foot, inability to use fins, poor buoyancy control and fear of mask clearing; 2. The curriculum program developed by this research is composed of nine units. Four course units with a total of 24 hours are devoted to confined water, i.e. skin diving skills and scuba equipment diving skills. Five course units are devoted to open water with a total of 10 hours, namely open water adaptation, entering and exiting surf zone, basic skill practice and ocean exploration. After the curriculum program is developed, the skill evaluation form is produced in response to key skills. The five evaluation items for skin diving skills are putting on and taking off diving fins, surface back stroke, surface fore stroke, twist body descension and cramp removal. The eight evaluation items for scuba equipment diving skills are assembly of equipment, disassembly of equipment, search and recovery of regulator, mask clearing, bottom neutral buoyancy, controlled descension, controlled ascension and buddy breathing (alternate air source); 3. Confined water course was conducted in the swimming pool with one instructing coach, two assisting coaches and one observer and concurrent photographer as well as 10 students. Students were paired with two students in one group. After the completion of each course, the coach and two assistant coaches filled out skill evaluation forms for their designated students. Open water course was conducted in Green Island Gong-Guan Port and Shihlang Diving Area with one principal coach, one instructing coach, five assistant coaches, one observer and concurrent photographer as well as 10 students; 4. After the courses were completed, the students’ overall passing rate was about 80%. It is recommended that colleges and universities intending to offer scuba diving courses should allocate at least three course hours per week. Moreover, seed teachers should be trained before the course begins so these teachers will be able to assist with teaching and safety in scuba diving courses after such training is concluded in order to minimize the risk.
