In the story, Peter Pan and Captain Hook are the leaders in their separate camps. They each have their own singular personality styles and traits, and owing to their deep-seated hatred and biases, they can’t tolerate each other (even readers know that they hate each other). And yet, there seems still to exist intriguing layers of the two characters’ relationship and handlings of each other, awaiting to be further explored. This study therefore focuses on examining and analyzing these possibly deeper layers of the relationship of Peter Pan and Hook, such as a like father-son relational dimension, identification of “the Other”, a mother complex, and so on.
This dissertation consists of five chapters. Chapter one introduces the study background on the relationships of both characters, and includes study objectives, research inquiries, methods and the like. The following chapters introduce the occasions of Barrie’s creating the two characters and the sequels by the other authors, analyze their personality traits and the effects on each other, as well as their relationship to Wendy who functions as an embodiment of the two characters’ mother fantasy or complex. The later chapters also use some psychoanalytic theses of Freud, Jung, and Lacan to help investigate the above-mentioned layers of the two characters’ personality traits and mutual interactions. This study finds and will demonstrate a surprising connection with Mr. Darling. The last Chapter draws a conclusion and suggestions from the media (re)presentation of the Peter Pan story. Ultimately, this study may provide readers with a different way to think about Pan and Hook, and may supply future researchers new clues with which to apprehend the multi-dimensioned relationship of Peter Pan and Captain Hook.
