A Study of Decorative Arts on Dun-huang Caisson Ceilings in Tang Dynasty / 唐代敦煌藻井裝飾研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 視覺傳達設計學系碩士班 / 102 / Dun-huang Cave is the representative of oriental art and a Buddhist cultural center with architectures, painted sculptures, and murals. Dun-huang caisson ceilings play an important role in the decorative arts. The shapes of pattern are unique, and magnificent. It creates interesting images of Buddhist pure land in the heaven. Dun-huang caisson ceiling pattern is a combination of different forms of art. This study is to focus on the caisson ceiling during the Tang dynasty and to explore the content and value of the caisson ceiling in iconography. The results show that the most patterns of caisson ceiling are lotus blossoms and wavy scrolls with plants. The floral motifs from a single pattern are designed into the motifs in roundel, together with the Angels from heaven and continuous balls, etc… The composition is square structure with curls gorgeous decorative patterns. It makes the grottoes with new styles. The characteristic of Dun-huang caisson ceiling are symmetry, balance, repetition, rhythm, deformation, and exaggerate. Practically, the composition and decoration of the caisson designs are the most precious treasures.
