Hai Ping-Su Wood Work’s and Pattern Design / 蘇海萍木作圖稿及作品研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣藝術大學 / 古蹟藝術修護學系 / 101 / Hai-ping Su (1920-1985) was born in Quan Zhou, Fujian Province. Due to the academic origin and influence of his family, Su learned the craft of woodcarving imperceptibly. In 1945, while serving in the military police unit, Su migrated to Taiwan with the army which took over the island. He had settled down in Taiwan after the military takeover. After his discharge from the military, in order to make ends meet, Su regained his woodcraft technique through several turning points and with time started a forty-year career in woodcarving, demonstrating his technique in the temples all around Taiwan. He was a wood craftsman who was considerably active in the work of temple woodcarving in Taiwan after the 1950s.
Nevertheless, even though the preservation of cultural heritage is highly valued nowadays, there is neither related research on Su nor research record of his works. Despite that some related documentations can be seen in literature involving interviews with craftsmen or introductions of antique architecture in Taiwan, such records are either merely derived from the interviews of others, or are relatively fragmentary and scattered among different sources. Furthermore, the validity of certain documentation also requires further investigation and examination.
In light of this, this study attempted to complete the life history of Su Hai-ping through interviews and literature review. The author also expected to decipher the making of his draft design, the sequential order of graphs and the expression of his artwork through the compilation, investigation and analysis of his woodcarving draft design. In addition, the research recorded the distribution and current status of the works which Su had supposedly contracted or participated in the production of. Following a methodical analysis of his woodcarving technique, the interpretation of the aesthetics of his woodcarving art was discussed in depth. Finally, the author also pointed out questionable records that could be found in related literature for further investigation.
