Investigating Travel Experience after the Overseas Study Tour and Place Attachment:The Tourist Involvement and Reflection Perspectives / 以旅遊涉入與反思觀點探討海外遊學經驗與地方依附

碩士 / 靜宜大學 / 觀光事業學系 / 101 / Due to the globalization and economic stability, traveling has become the part of Taiwanese’ life, and overseas study tour also becomes popular. The cross-cultural experience of study tour has a variety of activities and takes much longer time than common package tour. The study tour experience would influence the attitudes and behaviors, then enhance the value and significance of travel. The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience of overseas study tour, and attempts to use the tourist involvement and reflection perspectives to discover how they influence tourists’ attitude and behavior, and how to effect their place attachment to the place visited and intention to revisit.
The research design is using the narrative analysis of qualitative research. The semi-structured individual in-depth interview was conducted to collect data. A total of 20 interviewees were selected by snowball sampling methods from the Providence University students who had participated in the winter or summer vacation study tour to Philippines. This research uses the analysis of “holistic – content” narrative. The research findings showed that there are three parts of study tour experience including school education, life, and leisure traveling. The reflection of the participants plays a significant role during the tour when they face the culture differences. The process of the reflection starts from stimulus, adjustment, to self-awareness. It not only influences the attitudes and behaviors of the tourists but also makes them grow up. In addition, the attachment to the place of the participants with a high involvement does not increase but develops a detachment when they travel to the country with lower level culture identity. However, the participants still have special emotional responses to the place, and recommend people to challenge themselves and accept different cultures. Finally, several suggestions are made for planning overseas study tour and future research.
