The Determinants of Oversea’ s Subsidiary Autonomy:A Case of Japanese MNC’ s Subsidiary in Taiwan / 多國籍企業海外子公司自主權影響因素之研究-以某日籍企業在台子公司為例

碩士 / 靜宜大學 / 管理碩士在職專班 / 101 / In the past decades, international business scholars have been moving their research focus from the parent companies to overseas subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNCs). The studies of management of subsidiaries are greatly expanded. Among them, the oversea’s subsidiary autonomy is said to be an important lesson. For MNCs, subsidiaries autonomy is relatively important. In the past, the main tasks of overseas subsidiaries are to implement and assist the parent company to expand and carry out the strategy. However, because of the rapid changes in the whole environment such as local laws, regulations, and customs that overseas subsidiaries encounter, overseas subsidiaries actively endeavor their autonomy. The current study tried to sort out the factors affecting the autonomy from the operation of overseas subsidiaries.
This research attempted to explore the extent of autonomy transferred from parent company to subsidiary and to investigate the factors which affect the autonomy and resource allocation of overseas subsidiaries. We first explored the influence of MNCs’s strategies on the resource allocation of overseas subsidiaries and furthermore investigated the impacts of MNC’s strategies on the autonomy of overseas subsidiaries.
Based on the interviews of the former and present senior managers in a subsidiary of a Japanese MNC in Taiwan who have been the first and second top managers of Taiwanese subsidiary so far, we found that Japanese MNCs intended to have higher level of control on their overseas’s subsidiary, but this Taiwanese subsidiary attempted to increase the extent of autonomy and higher level of resource allocation within the MNC network according to achieving performance goal set by parent company.
The current study proposed a framework of factors affecting subsidiary autonomy of MNCs which would be helpful to the follow-up relevant academic studies and also provide reference value on managing and operating overseas’subsidiaries of MNCs.
