碩士 / 東吳大學 / 政治學系 / 101 / The South China Sea disputes result from the abundant fishery, oil and gas resources. Countries around this area have fought for the islands and reefs since the 1990s. The disputes are due to its overlapping area and the concerned countries declared their legal sovereignty by respective historical and lawful reasons.
  After President Obama was elected, he initiated a series of Asia policy and declared the navigation right of the South China Sea the national interest of the United States, indicating the U.S. concern of the South China Sea disputes. As a result, the situations around the South China Sea Area became more complex and countries around here have different responses to the U.S. policy. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the Obama administration's South China Sea Policy.
  The reason that Obama's South China Sea policy reflects its defense and economic interests, and also its commitments to America's allies and friends in Asia.
  The U.S. shares the same position as the ASEAN that the South China Sea disputes should be resolved through multilateral mechanism while the China and Cambodia are in favor of bilateral negotiation. Vietnam and Philippines try to get the U.S. involved to make the disputes internationalize.
  To carry out its South China Sea Policy, the Obama administration has taken the following approaches: public policy statements, senior officials' visit, bilateral interactions, and multilateral cooperation. Though the United States indicates it won't intervene into the disputes, the settlement of the dispute is critical to the U.S. national interests. In short, the Obama administration's South China Sea policy is a part of its Asia policy, while the Asia policy is a part of its global strategies.
