To Discuss the Education and Position of the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology By Science Centrum Theory / 從Science Centrum 的論述探討海洋科技博物館的定位與教育

The "Science Centrum", proposed by W. Orchiston and R. Bhathal in 1986, is a
new kind of performances institutions which discussed the characteristic of science
museums and science centers. In this paper, the author tries to utilize this point of
view to figure out domestic distinction between the attributes of the Science Museum
and Science Center. And what science museums could provide to the audience when
they face this situation with the raising consciousness of the marine science and
technology education. Under this point, the paper will further discuss the positioning
of the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology (NMMST), reflecting on
its strengths, challenges, and resources such as schools and community participation,
in order to provide the public with easier to get close to marine science and
technology.
The author compares the navigation exhibition which in Deutsches Museum and
Exploratoium. Through the corroboration of the relevant literature, summarizes that
both the Science Museum and Science Center main difference in whether the
collection. The Science Museum has an advantage of objects, but the difficulty of
preservation. Science center hasn’t collection, but it full thriving hands-on activities.
Science center emphasize interactive experience, but comparing with science museum,
the exhibition lack of integrity and series.
Accordingly, thinking about the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Hall
of NMMST whose theme shows the technology of shipping instead of static
collections. So the NMMST uses lots of hands-on activities tries to display the
contemporary development of marine technology, in order to dispose of traditional
way of presenting objects in the museum.
The hands-on activities tools need diversely to be designed by cooperation and
participation. The participation of community has a significant power toward science
center. NMMST has especial marine technology issue that use its advantage try to
make relationship with the outside community. Now, NMMST cultivate and incubate
the teacher of marine technology. With the participation of the educational community,
the museum hopes to absorb the resources from outside to inside and successfully
promote the education of marine technology. The future challenges of NMMST
confront is lacking of other types of community participation, and exhibition design
and update. Therefore, the subjection is tried to attract outside community
participation and satisfy public expectations. The other researchers can track NMMST
education-oriented, to help the public understand the ocean science, technology, and
the relationship between people.
