Arrangement and Atmosphere of Images: From Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood forLove re-look to Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Flowers of Shanghai / 影像的陳列與氛圍:《花樣年華》重看《海上花》

碩士 / 國立臺南藝術大學 / 動畫藝術與影像美學研究所 / 101 / The two directors, Wong Kar-Wai and Hou Hsiao-Hsien, are internationally acclaimed due to their famous films. Even though their styles are different, their outstanding achievements are still recognized. Wong Kar-Wai mentioned that he really appreciated Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s determination during the interview; Hou Hsiao-Hsien thinks that Wong Kar-Wai’s strategies of making movies are unique. In addition, both Wong Kar-Wai and Hou Hsiao-Hsien, who are well known of Hong Kong New Wave Film and Taiwan New Film, play an important role of the pioneer in the film histories of Hong Kong and Taiwan respectively. The Chinese Films within the two periods have drawn more attention globally because of the artistic representations, especially In the Mood for Love (2000) and Flowers of Shanghai (1998).

This thesis mainly focuses on arrangement and atmosphere as the spindle for these two visual analyses. The emphasis of this thesis is the comparison between the film aesthetics of the movie Flowers of Shanghai (1998) and In the Mood for Love (2000) by textual analysis of images according to the aesthetic form of films, and then it further includes the analyses and discussions about the visual differences with arrangement and atmosphere in these two films by using the composition of scene expression, camera movement and narration technique to compare the aesthetics differences between the two visual representations. Furthermore, it attempts to discuss the two movies that represent the culture evaluation in post-modernist reminiscence atmosphere.

The aesthetic differences in the two films with arrangement and atmosphere embody two directors’ fear of history toward the reform of the end of the century. When looking back to the history, they attempt to supply new perspectives and different visual representation of nostalgia atmosphere transferring into emotions and memory of the images in these films.
