The Research of Applying Taiwanese Aboriginal Legends and Myths in Poster Design / 台灣原住民神話傳說應用於海報設計之研究

碩士 / 中國科技大學 / 視覺傳達設計研究所 / 102 / Each of Taiwan’s Aboriginal peoples has a rich and diverse heritage of myths and legends. These are among the elements most frequently used by designers and creative artists to present a distinctive Taiwanese character and cultural style.

Based on a sample comprising the 46 prize-winning works from the “Legends of Formosan Aborigines: 2011 Students’ Indigenous Poster Design Competition” of the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines, this study applies focus group and content analysis methods to analyze the sampled works in two major respects: 1.to ascertain the modes of visual expression utilized by the poster artists, including dominant color, visual elements, expressive themes, expressive techniques, and types of media used; and 2.to assess the effectiveness and degree of authenticity of the communication of Aboriginal cultural characteristics through the medium of posters.

The study found that the colors used were taken mainly from Aboriginal material culture and artifacts; the principal visual elements were most often graphic representations of deer, humans, and totemic motifs; the artists mainly expressed tribal characteristics through animal-related themes taken from Aboriginal myths and legends; the expressive technique most often used in the posters was vector graphics; the main medium used in manual work was colored pencils; and the works within the research sample achieved a high degree of effectiveness in expressing the Aboriginal spirit, totemic motifs and cultural characteristics.
