A New Method for Oil Spill Response-The Use of Nanophotocatalyst for Heavy Oil Degradation / 海洋油污染處理新方法- 奈米光觸媒於重油的分解

碩士 / 中央警察大學 / 水上警察研究所 / 102 / Recently, the issues of marine environmental protection has been attracted a great deal of public attention around the world. The marine traffic is busy in the vicinity of Taiwan, and marine accidents happened constantly every year. The reasons lead on to the crisis of oil pollution. After an oil spill accident occurs, initial clean up responses to a spill at sea are often based on the use of dispersant or the containment and recovery of oil using booms and skimmers. However, these oil recovery method have its restriction to put into practice, and even become an additional pollutant into the water. Although bioremediation is an environmentally-friendly approach among oil spill response techniques, its practical use is restricted and it takes time to degrade oil.
In the presence of ultraviolet light (364nm), 7nm nano-titanium dioxide (Nano-TiO2) photocatalyst have the ability to create highly-reactive radicals which are extremely powerful oxidation agents resulting in the destruction of the oil and formation of carbon dioxide and water. In the heavy oil degradation experiment of this paper, the independent variables are the concentration of heavy oil and illuminated time of ultraviolet light. After the experimental procedures are performed, the samples is then analyzed by pyrolysis gas chromatography /mass spectrometer(Py-GC-MS).
Since the degrading process has taken place for 8 hours, the residual heavy oi of the case of 10μl decreased to 56%; however, the residual heavy oi of the case of 20μl decreased to 26.4%; and 8% of the case of 30μl. The results show the effectiveness of degradation of heavy oil by nano-titanium dioxide photocatalyst.Nano-titanium dioxide photocatalyst can be a new tool for oil spill response in the future.
