碩士 / 遠東科技大學 / 機械工程研究所在職專班 / 102 / The Optimist dinghy is one of the official classes of international sailing regatta. It is also the most popular sailboat within all classes. This study investigates numerically the drag force on the Optimist dinghy. The primary parameters discussed in this study including: various sailing velocity, forward and backward tilt angles and heel angles of the boat. The purpose of this research is to provide reference regarding sailing tactics for Optimist sailors and coaches.
The results show that when the dinghy is flat and the forward and backward tilt angle is zero, the drag force on the dinghy has a minimum value , no matter what sailing velocity. Meanwhile, the relationship between drag force(D) and sailing velocity (V) can be expressed as D=13.78.V^2 . The drag force decreases with increasing backward tilt angle in the vertical direction, which results in pushing the hull up and the dinghy planning at high speed. Considering the variation of heel angles, the minimum drag occurs at ten degrees of heeling angle under low velocity condition. When the velocity raised to 2ms^-1 and 3ms^-1, the minimum drag force occurs at five degrees of heeling angle. As the velocity and heel angle both increase, the torque increase accordingly.
