A Vernacular Education Project for Nanya Settlement in Northeastern Taiwan / 台灣東北角南仔吝鄉土教育企劃~海‧雨‧山‧石的漁村聚落

碩士 / 華梵大學 / 建築學系碩士班 / 102 / Nanya fishing port, also known as Lam-a-lin, situated between San-diao-jiao and Keelung, is a frontier settlement on the northeastern tip of Taiwan. Different from the nearby Bi-tou fishing port and Shui-nan-dong, dependent on its fishery and mining industry, Nanya was reclaimed for farming at the beginning and later for fishery due to its abundant fishery resources. Therefore; in spite of the decline of offshore fishery resources, the development of fishing in Nanya settlement, after transforming to recreational fishery, has remained a fairly high level.
A brook, flowing through the settlement, was connected to the sea before the coastal highway was built. The surrounding area from the brook to the beach was the main area of recreation, socializing and even production for the residents. Relationship between the residents and the sea is close. Hence Nanya is said to be the settlement which has the most love for the sea among other settlements on northeastern tip of Taiwan.
It is worth noting that Nanya had contact with Christianity twice in the past. The first foreign missionary Mackay paid a visit there and Pastor Lee Bang-zhu established Jia-mi-yuan and evangelized. Although the residents eventually chose to believe in traditional religion, the western religion brought a modern atmosphere into the settlement, which was rarely seen in others on the northeastern tip of Taiwan.
The offshore fishery and agriculture are the main foundation of Nanya settlement, which are as well the primary elements of local cultural landscape. In addition, modern Christianity and traditional local religion are the crucial components in Nanya. Even with such a unique cultural background, Nanya is still out of favor with the residents and tourists. The former always leave, while the latter would not stay long.
The data in this research were collected from literature review, old photos, field research, experiences, interviews with local residents and online interaction through Facebook. It is anticipated that through this localized and lively local culture education proposal the unique human customs can be modified; sense of identity of the residents can be developed; the charm of dual-facet Nanya can be experienced by tourists. It is also hoped that the potential of Nanya’s culture industry can be achieved and therefore this special cultural landscape can be sustainably preserved.
