Abstract
Language is a very important tool for communication. In addition to the accuracy of expression, the aesthetic of expression is emphasized equally or even more. By so doing, the quality of expression can matches the content of expression, thereby reaching the goal of perfection. Rhetoric is the shortcut to the artistic achievement of verbal expression. This thesis is aimed at investigating the Chinese textbooks for high graders in elementary school. At first, this research explores the origin of rhetoric and the classification of the figures of speech as well as the teaching skills of rhetoric.
This study also analyzes the figures of speech found in the articles of elementary school high grade textbooks. In three different versions and during four semesters, a total of one hundred and sixty-two units are analyzed. The relationship between sentence and figure of speech should be listed out and revised. The rhetoric techniques of articles in textbooks from different versions are analyzed and summarized, in a hope that this study can help teachers choose textbooks and design curriculum, can help textbook-writers write the textbooks, and help researchers study textbooks. The results of my thesis are as follows:
I. From the Chinese teaching materials issued by three different Publishers and more than twenty figures of speech found in elementary school high-grade teacher’s handbooks, we come to know that rhetorical repetition are the most used, followed by parable and transformation.
II. There are twenty-one figures of speech used in Nan-yi version and Han-lin version, and twenty figures of speech are used in Kang-xuan version. Thus, from teacher’s handbooks, we know Nan-yi version and Han-lin version have the most different figures of speech.
III. As for the frequency of use of figures of speech, the most one is Nan-yi version, which appears 935 times, the second one is Han-lin version, which appears 698 times, and the third one is Kang-xuan version, which appears 659 times.
IV. As for the errors concerning figure of speech, Kang-xuan version, which has 339 errors, outnumbers Han-lin version, which has 187 errors, and Nan-yi version, which has 137 errors. Therefore, Nan-yi version has the least errors.
V. In terms of balance of the distribution of figure of speech, Nan-yi version is the best one, with 8% of parable and 10% of transformation, the second one is Kang-xuan version, with 7.1% of parable and 4.9% of transformation, and the third one is Han-lin version, with 9% of parable and 5.9% of transformation.
VI. In terms of quality and the use of parable and transformation in the textbooks, the good sentences of Nan-yi version are the most complete, possessing the first position; Han-lin version is the second one; and Kang-xuan version is the third one.
VII. Suggestions:in order to develop students’ creativity and the ability of association, the sentences of parable and transformation are indispensable. With practices and efforts, students must be good at drawing inferences about other cases from one instance, comprehending by analogy, and writing quickly and smoothly, thereby cultivating rhetorical techniques and possessing profound literary background.
