The life stories of two Chinese-Indonesian immigrants in Taiwan:struggling to overcome predicaments / 跨海編織的「韌性」—兩位印尼棉蘭華裔新移民女性超越逆境的生命故事

碩士 / 國立暨南國際大學 / 東南亞研究所 / 102 / This study adopted narrative research to investigate two new immigrant women who are Chinese-Indonesian and from Medan. These are their life stories about how they overcome predicaments and find out contexts and operation models of their internal and external protective factors in order to show completely resilience track.
The question arose from I listened to a new immigrant woman who is raising a disability child and talked about her life experience, and by her narration, I sensed the conflicts of her vitality and social stereotype, and then I started this study, hopefully it could provide a different way to understand new immigrant women who are from heterogeneous group. After listening to these two stories, I wrote their stories according to what they mentioned, and then I adopted resilience theory to analyze co-authors’ protective factors those include external social supports and internal personality traits and core beliefs. Moreover, I concluded two operation models of protection and sublimation by interaction of risk factors and protective factors.
From study results, we know formal social supports of two co-authors are from government’s welfares, and informal social supports are from their own interpersonal relationship. These two women’s interpersonal relationships are across Taiwan and Indonesia. Their families-of-origin have business in Indonesia and incomes are good, so they could offer economic support to co-authors when it is necessary, and this is different from normal new immigrant women who need to send money to their homes. Besides, many of their internal personalities and beliefs are from their early life experience in Indonesia and continue them in Taiwan, furthermore, those are shown when they met difficulties, they thought of “ to be stronger as a mother”, and this is main power in their minds supporting co-authors encountering predicaments. These internal and external protective factors assisted co-authors forming protection model in the beginning of encountering difficulties, and eliminating damages arose by risk factors. Sublimation model appeared in later stage of overcoming predicaments and achieved changes in meanings of life.
