The Development and Implication of U.S. AirSea Battle / 美國空海整體戰的發展與內涵

碩士 / 國防大學 / 戰略研究所 / 102 / Chinese military strength has been growing with its booming economy. People’s Liberation Army is developing sophisticated capabilities called “Anti-Access/Area-Denial” (A2/AD). The purpose of A2/AD capabilities is believed to prevent any foreign intervention, America’s intervention in particular, from entering the Asia-Pacific theater. The United States, claiming herself a Pacific country and asserting national interests in the Western Pacific, has accordingly developed an operational concept called “AirSea Battle” (ASB) to counter PLA’s A2/AD capabilities. The goals of ASB are to ensure the U.S. military freedom of action, to safeguard America’s allies, as well as to maintain the U.S. military dominance in the Western Pacific.
Since the revelation of ASB in 2010, the origin, development, aims, and intentions of ASB have not yet been completely expounded by U.S. officials. Therefore, this paper will review the documents of the U.S. government, studies of think tanks, and viewpoints of the pundits to define the contents and strategic implications of ASB.
