Distribution of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the water and sediments of Kaohsiung Harbor,Taiwan / 高雄港底層水及沉積物中有機碳、氮及磷之分佈

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 海洋環境工程研究所 / 102 / This research, through on-site sampling and monitoring, performs a content analysis of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) contained in Kaohsiung Harbor surface sediments, and accordingly evaluates their temporal-spatial distribution, sources and potential impacts on the benthos. The sampling locations include the Harbor, channels and estuaries of rivers, reaching a total of twenty survey points. All eighty samples were collected in January, March, August and October in 2013. The results indicate that the TOC contents of Kaohsiung Harbor sediments ranges from 1.0 to 7.0% (average 2.3±0.3%) with the highest level of 6.8±0.2% in the Salt River estuary, and the second highest one of 5.5±0.8% in the Love River estuary. The TN content ranges from 990 to 10,582 mg/kg (average 2,665±1,800 mg/kg) and the TP values are between 178 and 784 mg/kg (average 363±147 mg/kg). The average values of TN and TP obtained from the estuary survey stations are about 1 to 4 times and 1 to 2 times measured in other stations, respectively. The content distribution of TOC, TN and TP demonstrates a high-to-low sequence: estuary, channel and Harbor, indicating that the organics in the sediments are mainly from the upstream inflow of rivers. The TOC, TN and TP contents in the wet seasons are obviously higher than those in the dry season, which might result from the terrestrial organics flushed into the Harbor by the seasonal abundant and concentrated precipitation. The source of the sediments' organic matters can be identified by the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N). Generally, the C/N ratio between 4 and 10 represents a marine autogenetic source; a C/N ratio greater than 12 suggests a terrestrial one. The C/N ratio of Kaohsiung Harbor sediments is between 4.6 and 26.9, with an average value of 11.9±6.6. Through further estimation, 76.5% of the TOC is identified as terrestrial, and the TN is dominated by marine autogenetic sources. Furthermore, the Kaohsiung Harbor region, except the highly polluted area in the Salt River estuary, is rated as medium-polluted, and could pose some potential impact on part of the benthos, after referring to the Sediment Quality Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment & Energy of Ontario, Canada.
