Cihouis the study area andthe sampan boats are the main target.Firstly,by analyzingthe geographical environment of the Port Takauand Cihou,in order to understandthe development of Cihou’sfor each period andthe course of the sampan boats’ evolution,and thenexaminethe relationship betweensampan boats and theCihou’s residents. Starting from the Dutch colonial period, the Pork Takau was from the fishery harbor, a small commercial port and thenbecame an international commercial port. Cihouwasfrom a small traderegionand then regarded as an area with military, fishing and trade functions. Moreover,the evolution of thePortTakau led the development of Cihou. With the development of Cihou,sampan boatsplayed various functions, includingfishing,emergency assistance, access, transport, guide and transportation. After reviewing the functions,we found that sampan boats’ historical evolution and the features of local developmentproperties. In the process of the evolution, they didn’t only becomeCihou local specialties, but also got into the lives of the Cihouresidents.The sampan boatsshould have been continued to survive with the development of Cihou, but finally sampan boats left the development track ofCihou, due to the reasons of “sampan boats phased completion of the task”, “sampan boatswas unsafe ship pheasant”, “sampan boats were old and often competedchannels with the ferries”,and “the city government should be responsible for the overall planning”.
