Applications of Fish Pattern Meaning to Creative Performance / 魚紋圖象意涵在創意表現之運用

The profound human value in fish patterns is a key element in the coherence of arts development among Chinese people (especially Han people). The part to educate people has actually affected the primitive life style and is the key in brewing folk power and inspiring ethics. Centered on literature analyses, the cultural phenomenon generated from local fish patterns is discussed in this study. Furthermore, the interpreted meaning and value are explored with interpretation and icon analyses. The development, symbolic meaning, folk culture, vector, and spiritual meaning of fish patterns and the education and therapy functions are briefly described, and the application to the regions with Han culture is discussed to understand the contexts and orientation of fish patterns in human history. Finally, the self-created brands of Luck Fish Tail and Fish-face Superman Family are proceeded case analyses to explore the culture formed by fish patterns and compared with relevant cases at the characteristic harbors in Penghu County for the design reference of successive cultural and creative products as well as the continuous development of culture and creative industry.
The research findings show that the application of fish patterns presented more sacredness than practice and beauty for primitive people, when people experienced the integration of ethnic groups, tribes, and clans. Afterwards, the living necessities were exchanged or expanded to commercial behaviors that the physical value of practice and beauty were the major considerations (market competitiveness) on the street. However, it is affirmed that, no matter how commercial completion relies on preference, the representative meaning of fish patterns, as the soul of an object, always exists and cannot be replaced, because any beautiful household utensils (or the extension) decorated with fish patterns would be connected with water and life and return to the initial meaning and spirit. More specifically, the value of fish patterns is the origin as well as the attraction to human.
