Discussing the Cheongsam Fashion in Early Republican Shanghai fromMonthly Calendar Posters(1920-1940) / 民初上海旗袍服飾的流行風尚(1920-1940) ─以月份牌廣告畫為例

Monthly calendar posters was one of important commercial posters in modern China. Its subjects were plentiful, and the beauties of cover were liked popularly by many people.
Cheongsams were popular from 1920 to 1940, and monthly calendar posters were the same. This research will investigate what styles of women’s cheongsam in the in early Republican Shanghai? What Western elements are decorated on cheongsam from monthly calendar posters?
The pictures of this research are scanned from publications and Shun Pao, women’s magazine, The Companion Pictorial are used to investigate the cheongsam fashion in early Republican Shanghai from monthly calendar posters.
This study found that cheongsam could make female figure soft, and the applications of lace and gauze made women’s body looked more sexy. The Cheongsam added Western elements could diversify and showed Chinese-Western fusion.
