Evaluating Academic Performance of Students of Life Sciences Undergraduate College in NTOU by different Recruitings / 大學多元入學管道學生學習成效分析-國立臺灣海洋大學生命科學院為案例

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 102 / The three features of university admission systems emphasized are "Diversity, Fairness", "Average high level students" and "High competitiveness" in industries. This study intended to analyze students from the College of Life Sciences at National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) from 2010 to 2011, which includes the Department of Life Science, the Department of Aquaculture, and the Department of Food Science. The analysis focused on students who obtained college admission through three different evaluation systems(College Admissions through Examination and Allocation; College Admissions through Application; and College Admissions via Recommendation, Selection and Multi-Stars Projects). These students scores were analyzed and compared by considering the diversity of their academic achienements in basic subjects and required career courses and the academic performance of the students through three different groups.
With the following 3 issues:(1) to discover what subjects were taken by students who enrolled via examination, application, and recommendation, which have obvious differences from their semester scores;(2) to compare students from the “same department” to observe if their academic performances in both the basic and required career courses differed when enrolling via the three ways mentioned above; and(3) to compare “entrance exam students” that applied to the College of Life Sciences to determine if their academic performances differed from department to department.
The research was conducted by utilizing Multivariate Statistical Analysis, the results show that: Multi-Stars students majoring in Life Science and Aquaculture, had outstanding performances in their basic and required career courses, due to their higher self-expectation and more positive attitude on study. Applicants from the Department of Food Science have a better advantage on English and basic subjects in science majors such as Biology and General Chemistry, because the department is subdivided into the Biotechnology Group and Food Science Group. These applicants will have a relatively higher interest and deeper understanding while they are preparing their profile, such a result enhances the effect of academic performances. Generally, applicants from College of Life Science have a better academic performance on basic subjects of language major such as Chinese and English, due to the secondary phase of the application exam, which can select students who have better language expressing abilities. Students, particularly those in the Department of Life Science who enrolled via Recommendation, had more consistent grades in every subject and higher grades in science (Chemistry and Biology), because most of them belonged in a Science major when they were in senior high school and have more similar scientific knowledge than the others before they entered college. Finally, the required score of the admission entrance exam had less influence on the academic performance of students from the above three departments, but the scores of the subjects that weighted more on the admission entrance exam showed a higher impact on their subsequent academic performance.
In conclusion, such implementations can be provided as a reference for college when allocating the enrollment number of students and looking forward to assisting departments on their admission, hopefully recruiting students with higher interests and more appropriate ones. Furthermore, during the college admission, we should take "college" as a unit, to gain more courses for students to select and more time to plan their future. Effective allocation of admission quotas and training students to fit in the industries properly, will improve the quality of students and the competitiveness of the departments.
