In this study, the satellite sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) data surrounding Taiwan are used to discuss their variations in time and space. The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) is also considered to explain changes to sea surface characteristics during periods of El Niño and La Niña. The satellite data was gathered between January 2004 and December 2012 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Aqua satellite of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The findings of the study indicate that, perhaps due to the influence of ocean currents (Kuroshio Current, China Coastal Current), Chl-a in the waters surrounding Taiwan is higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, as well as higher close to shore and lower in open water. Chl-a also rises sharply in areas of shallow water on the continental shelf. SST displays seasonal change, with high temperature reaching 29°C (all areas) in summers and 13°C in winters (higher in the southeast, lower in the northwest). The highest SST appears in the South China Sea, while the lowest SST appears in western coasts of the East China Sea. In comparison, the effect of La Niña on the waters surrounding Taiwan is more apparent than that of El Niño, with a stronger response observed in winter than in summer. The waters off the south coasts of Taiwan are more affected by La Niña than other areas. When La Niña occurs, winter SST is low and Chl-a is high. Change in Chl-a concentration generally shows lower concentration during periods of El Niño and higher concentration during periods of La Niña, and these changes are consistent with changes in the SOI.
