The Relevance of Audit Quality and Cost of Debt Capital – the Empirical Evidence from SMEs in Taiwan and Mainland China / 海峽兩岸中小企業審計品質與其負債資金成本關聯性之研究

碩士 / 靜宜大學 / 會計學系 / 102 / Previous research on the relevance of audit quality and the cost of debt capital was limited and seldom concentrate on the comparative analysis of empirical results from Taiwanese and Mainland China’s SMEs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relevance of audit quality and the cost of debt capital in Taiwanese SMEs and in Mainland China’s SMEs separately, and to comparatively analyze the empirical results between Taiwanese and Mainland China’s SMEs. Using 2185 observations in the sample of Taiwanese SMEs and 3664 observations in the sample of Mainland China’s SMEs during the period of 2003 to 2012, the empirical results of multivariate regressions showed that the relationship between audit quality and the cost of debt capital in the sample of Taiwan is significantly negative. On the other hand, the relationship between audit quality and the cost of debt capital in the sample of Mainland China is also negative, but it is not statistically significant. The empirical results of this study have two contributions. First, it provides the empirical evidence of the relevance of audit quality and the cost of debt capital for the research of SMEs. Second, it provides an implication for the financial decision of SMEs that a firm should enhance and increase its audit quality in order to decrease its cost of debt.
