Breaking Through the Marriage Mirage:A Discourse Analysis of the Gays' Wives Internet Forum in China / 穿越婚姻的海市蜃樓:中國同妻網路討論區中的論述分析

碩士 / 世新大學 / 性別研究所 / 102 / Although LGBTQ community is not as invisible as before, women who marry gay people (gays’ wives) are still neglected. This research chooses the most representative internet forum in Chinese internet communities, gay wife’s tieba (chatting bar), and analyzes the internet discourse through feminist standpoint theories. Besides observing and in-depth understanding the gays’ wives’ needs from their chatting forum, this study will also discuss further issues on political and social construction within the forum. The most important issue might be to discuss how the gay’s wives internet forum becomes their shelter under the dominance of the traditional heterosexual marriage system, and also the base of their empowerment as well.
The result shows that gays’ wives empower themselves by otherizing gays and hold the authority of speaking out; language and words which have been used on the forum reflect gay people’s stigma but represent gays’ wives’ subjectivity. Rules created by the forum also separate gay people as an opposite aspect.
The discourse shows that when a gay’s wife discovers her husband’s gay identity, she tends to blame herself not being a nice wife and a good mother firstly. However, this social expectation on women origins from patriarchy society which romanticizes the roles of being wife and mother; for example, the caring character is thought as feminine attribute. Gay people joining heterosexual marriage deprives their wives of freedom and opportunities, hiding their homosexual identity behind their heterosexual wives, taking their wives as tools of childbirth, and vanishing their wives’ existence and the meaning of wives in marriage.
Under the discussion of gays’ wives, married gay people might not be blamed by their male identity; they eventually will be accepted by societies’ moral tolerance. Gay people will also be empathized and accepted by their sexual identity. On the contrary, the gay wife’s community is blamed because the social system tends to put women as the main reason causing a failed marriage and also to criticize them as heterosexual people who oppress gays’ privileges to join marriage.
