In addition to the sovereignty dispute over the South China Sea among countries, its development of natural resources has also generated a lot of dissensions. ASEAN member countries find the South China Sea as of their vital interest, and the People's Republic of China finds it as its “core interest.” Among the sovereignty dispute over the South China sea, conflicts between Vietnam and China are the most intense. Thus, in order to understand the complex problems of the South China Sea, we must first understand these two countries. Therefore, the two countries are the main objects of the study. Other countries and their positions are discussed in Chapter two, but are not otherwise explored in detail over the remaining chapters.
The main conflict between China and Vietnam is the territory dispute over the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Thus, the study focuses on these two islands, along with their political, strategical, and economical aspects in order to explore the sovereignty disputes, security, and energy benefits of the South China Sea. The study mainly used the perspective of international political science to explore the interaction and relationships between the China and Vietnam, starting from the evolution of their history, so as to consistently understand their recent political strategies.
Therefore, the study explored their history as early as the founding of the Chinese communist government in 1949 and Vietnam in 1945. Then the study analyzed the recent conflict and dispute over the South China Sea and the coping strategies of the two countries and Taiwan’s response. Hopefully, the countries will use cooperative development as a way to replace military force, use neoliberalism in replace for realism as ways to coordinate and develop the resources of the South China Sea.
