A Study of Chang You-Yu’s “Little Chieftain You-Ma” Series / 張友漁《小頭目優瑪》系列研究

碩士 / 國立雲林科技大學 / 漢學應用研究所 / 102 / Chang You-Yu often makes use of Taiwanese local culture and natural scenery as the background of her works, which includes cultural heritage, ethnic integration, human care and environmental protection issues. In her works, we can find her love and concern for the residents who live on Taiwan. Her works are full of deep “Taiwanese flavor.”

This thesis studies the character shaping techniques and the content of Chang You-Yu’s “Little Chieftain You-Ma” series. Through discussing the Paiwan culture presented in this series from different research perspectives, the thesis attempts to study the culture systematically. This thesis first discusses Chang You-Yu’s writing career and motivation of this series. Then, it probes into the shaping of character, cultural writing, content as well as educational implication supplemented by the theories of children’s literature, adolescent psychological development, psychology and so on.

Based on the juvenile realistic technique, Chang You-Yu creates some unique and solid characters successfully. She also infuses the fantastic element of fairy tales into depicting organisms. She utilizes both the realistic and fantastic skills to create a literary world that is made up of both reality and fantasy, presenting another aspect and perception for the local juvenile fiction. She also incorporates aboriginal culture such as ancestral spirits, witches, totemism and other elements into her works, through which aboriginal culture was introduced. Besides, love is the core of theme in her works. There are also interesting and abounding subject-matters, which contain rich knowledge and the ideal attitude of life. Her juvenile fiction works, therefore, successfully infuse education into entertainment.
