The analysis of destruction of gravity-type wharf- An empirical study on a wharf of Kaohsiung port / 重力式碼頭破壞案例調查分析 -以高雄港某碼頭為例

碩士 / 國立高雄應用科技大學 / 土木工程與防災科技研究所 / 103 / The bulkhead of wharf usually suffers damage by the force of waving, earthquake, typhoon, mooring, erosion of engine propellant, etc. The study has been done by D.E.R evaluation for the severity of damage, analysis of the root cause of damage and proposal of the recommendations for improvements. Accordingly, the wharf case in this study can be well functional and guarantees for the safety of the construction, and the wharf shall operate properly.
The study shows that the overall damage index ID2 is 7.08, as 3rd level that is greater than 6 by D.E.R. evaluation, which indicates that not only the safety of the structure is in immediate danger but also its functionality is not operating well. The wharf must be shut down instantly either considered to reconstruct. Furthermore, that the section of wharf in original design is lack of sliding resistance slips wharf outward by encountering earthquake or external force, and all tension passing to earth wall also make wharf moving outward because it did not construct with independent base for each ship bollard. Less flatness and high porosity of pebble stones under water could cause low friction against with bottom-layer block. Besides current base layer, consisting of silty clay loam with high moisture, the improper size and arrangement of block could make wharf sunk and destroyed permanently.
The study strongly recommends adjusting to rotate by 180 degrees, which can increase tension for backfill of each type of block and greatly stabilize the piled-blocks. Furthermore, the smooth over seaside surface of wharf can avoid ships from being collision and hitting rocks while mooring and traveling. Upon completion of the analysis, the wharf with those improvements is able to be safer than original one.
