Semantics and Constructions of Hit Phrases in Hailu Hakka Dialect / 海陸客家話「打」字詞的語意與結構

碩士 / 國立新竹教育大學 / 臺灣語言與語文教育研究所 / 103 / ‘打 da3’ is polysemous in both Chinese Mandarin or Hakka dictionary. And Hakka’s ‘da3’ has some more different usages which are not found in Mandarin. This thesis aims to figure out an integrative interpretation of polysemous ‘da3’ by analysing its constructions and polysemous usages.
First, the constructions of ‘da3’ phrases are divided into two types: ‘da3+NP ’and ‘da3+VP/AP’. According to semantic characteristics of the noun after ‘da3’, ‘da3+NP ’ is further divided into six groups, 1a. NP as object, 1b. NP as a result, 1c. NP as theme, 1d. NP denotes action, 1e. NP denotes implicit event, and 1f. NP is weather term. ‘da3+VP/AP’ is subdivided into 2a. VP/AP as a result, 2b. ‘da3’ is meaningless empty form, 2c. ‘da3’ and the following ‘VP/AP’ forms a parallel structure.
A throughout semantic analysis and classification of the polysemy of ‘da3’ combining with Generative Lexicon theory, we can simplify the numerous interpretations of ‘da3’ into three basic meanings. The first one is the origingal ‘hit’
meaning. The second‘da3’ has lost its ‘hit’ meaning and only the meaning of ‘hand motion’ left; the exact meaning of ‘da3’ phrases in this type is a combination of ‘hand
motion’ and its following words which may lead to interpretation like ‘to make, to weave’. The third ‘da3’ is totally grammaticalized to a ‘grammatical marker’like ‘do’.
As the ‘hit’ meaning of ‘da3’ fading away, the word after ‘da3’ has taken the main role in the semantic interpretation of ‘da3’ phrase. Therefore the polysemy of
‘da3’ comes from not only ‘da3’, but a combination of ‘da3’ and its following word.
