The Variations of the Ca2+ Concentration in the Estuary—A case study in the Kaoping River Mouth / 河口中鈣離子濃度的變化—以高屏溪口為例

碩士 / 國立高雄海洋科技大學 / 海洋環境工程研究所 / 103 / Marcet Principle indicates the composition of the main elements (> 0.05 mmol/kg) in the ocean is approximately constant. Chemical Oceanographer used the Ca2+/Salinity relationship–[Ca2+] mol/kg = 2.934 ×10-4 • S to calculate Ca2+ concentration in the ocean. However, in the estuary freshwater inputs may disturb the Ca2+/S relationship.
Currently, some areas (Japans sea and Mississippi river etc.) have been rebuilt the Ca2+/S relationship. Therefore this study wanted to understand the relationship between Ca2+ concentration and salinity at the Kaoping estuary which is the largest river–sea interaction systems in southern Taiwan. Using Tsunogai’s EGTA titration method to determine Ca2+ concentration in natural water, the results show that the linearity of Ca2+/S in dry season is [Ca2+] mol/kg = 2.32×10-4‧S+2.219×10-3, and in wet season is [Ca2+] mol/kg = 2.52×10-4‧S+1.655×10-3 respectively.
The change rate with [Ca2+]/S of Kaoping River’s estuary is about 16 〜 22% lower than that in the open ocean. Therefore Ca2+ concentration is a key to CaCO3 saturation at the estuary.
