碩士 / 國立高雄第一科技大學 / 運籌管理系企業管理碩士班 / 103 / Maritime transport has been always an important pipeline of the foreign trade to every country,but the changes in market condition are hard to be predicted in recent years.The uncertainties of fluctuating oil prices and freight rates cause great risk to shipping lines’ operation,and the fuel costs take the highest proportion of the total costs especially.So the shipping lines expect to reduce the fuel costs and maximize the profits by slow-steaming.
However,when shipping lines reduce the fuel costs by slow-steaming,this extends the sailing time on sea and can’t make the service frequency in routes maintained.Most researches assume the service frequency and freight rates are constant to find out the sailing speed that maximizes the profits,that is,the total revenue is unchanged under all different sailing speeds.It means shipping lines need more ships to maintain the service frequency when they reduce the fuel costs by slow-steaming,this also increases the rents of ships.Even so,the degree of increased rents is still lower than that one of fuel costs,in other words,when the service frequency and freight rates are constant,the lowest sailing speed maximizes the profits.To find out how to make the highest sailing speed maximize the profits,this paper changes the degree of freight rates,increasing the freight rates when the sailing speed increases.
The result shows when the freight rates with the increasing saling speed,it makes the highest sailing speed maximize the profits indeed, but with the rise in oil prices,the sailing speed that maximizes the profits decreases gradually,which means if the shipping lines want to maximize the profits in the case of high oil prices and high sailing speed,the degree of freight rates should be increased more.
