Helping some actors suffering in poverty be able to celebrate Chinese New Year happily, the performers won''t take their payment but giving these payment to the actors in need. In 1877, an editorial in Shun Pao(申報) write about promoting charity performance, in addition, charity show were often held in the concession. These two reasons lead Shanghai crane sound opera troupe(上海鶴鳴戲園) to hold a charity performance for disaster relief of Shandong. However, there are no other followers until the early Mingou years that the development of charity performance had a remarkable change.

The failure of westernizing movement in the end of the Ching dynasty invoked some intelligentsia start to innovate the ideology of the public. Chinese opera plays a broadcast role in this innovation trend. Some actors start to concern social activities. Holding charity performance can not only help actors in poverty, but also can establish a charitable image and put himself to a higher position.

In the beginning of the 20th century, intelligentsia want to innovate the ideology of the public. Some of them tend to make it through traditional Chinese opera; another group tend using the western drama instead. It causes the conflict between traditional Chinese opera and western drama. As the maturing of the charity performance, it not only faces the competition between actors and theaters, but also has to fight back the shock of western drama.

Charity show is not only a great chance to set up the image and fame for actors, but also an opportunity for amateur actors to establish their stage image. As the result, lots of Shanghai opera amateur actors join to the charity performance and made performances were held more frequently. Later, Shanghai entertainment circle, charity performance included, was controled by Shanghai Green gang that its influence had increased gradually. As time passes, the original intention of charity performance was changed totally.
