Population genetics of Terapon jarbua around Taiwanese waters / 臺灣周圍海域花身鯻(Terapon jarbua)族群遺傳研究

碩士 / 國立中山大學 / 海洋科學系研究所 / 103 / In the past studies, phylogeography and population genetics of marine fishes were focused on large-scale research. However, to date, none of previous studies on marine fishes were conducted with a small sampling rage to show lack of genetic structure in a limited area. Taiwan, a small island, would be an ideal locality to test whether population genetic structure can be observed in small geological range. In this study, we examined cytochrome b sequences to estimate population genetics of Terapon. jarbua around Taiwan. Ninety seven individuals were sampled from 10 localities throughout Taiwan and one locality in Guangdong. NJ tree and NCA show T. jarbua are divided into two groups, but correlation of sampling localities to genetic structure is absent and gene flow among localities is common. High level of haplotype diversity (H=0.935) are detected, indicating a high level of genetic diversity and low level of nucleotide diversity (π=0.00567). Conventional population FST (0~0.2031) comparisons revealed lack of significant genetic structure indicated that T. jarbua likely experienced a demographic expansion and that is also supported by mismatch distribution and goodness-of-fit test. Based on the data from this study, we suggest T. jarbua around Taiwan experienced expansion. According to Bayesian skyline plot T. jarbua experienced population expansion since 10,000 to 25,000 BP, which matched the last glacier between 10,000 to 70,000 BP in the Pleistocene. Sea-level changes might exert efforts on population isolation. After the glacial, frequent gene flows among populations would be the reason for shaping population genetic and population demographic of T. jarbua around Taiwanese waters.
