碩士 / 國立中山大學 / 海洋環境及工程學系研究所 / 103 / In February 2008, the United Nations issued the report regarding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission around the world. According to the report, the CO2 discharged by the sea shipping industry took up 4.5% of total amount globally. Nevertheless, the European Union did not account for the deduction of CO2 by the shipping industry when setting the target of CO2 emission reduction. This situation shows that the quantity of CO2 emission by the global shipping industry has been underestimated for long time. Currently the international sea transportation has consumed 5% of the oil production in the entire world, which is around four hundred million and fifteen million tons. Therefore before shipping industry adopting a new and green energy, it is an important issue regarding how to enhance the efficiency of fuel usage and thus the reduction of CO2 emission.
With the approval of the sea shipping companies, this study acquired the operational data of some commercial ships. Then we used the internationally recognized software, which is capable of finding an effective fuel usage plan, and developed a linear programming model to analyze the data. Eventually we are able to identify the most effective and economic plan for ship operations. The results would provide a useful reference for the shipping companies to enhance the energy efficiency and thus the reduction of fuel usage and CO2 emission.
