Comparative studies of vertebral and fin ray counts among 42 muraenid species from Taiwanese waters / 臺灣海域42種鯙科魚類脊椎骨與鰭條計數之比較研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣海洋大學 / 水產養殖學系 / 103 / The fishes of moray eels (Family Muraenidae) are known as the belonging to class Actinopterygii, order Anguilliformes. Around Taiwan waters are rich in moray eel resources. A total of 59 muraenidae species belonging to 12 genera and 2 subfamilies are recognized in Taiwan. In this research, a total of 42 moray eel species belonging 2 subfamilies 8 genera were collected from the waters around Taiwan, 3 species of Echiana, 3species of Enchelycore, 1species of Gymnomuraena, 29 species of Gymnothorax, 1species of Pseudechidna, 1 species of Scuticaria, 1 species of Strophidon, 3 species of Uropterygius. All samples were measured morphologically, the moray eel samples images recorded for an X-rays, after counted the moray eel vertebrae and fin rays at the X-rays, compared species, genera and subfamilies. There are the rare studies about the fin ray of muraenids have be done, wherefore the further to research for range of fin rays of moray eels. The study can provide the fin ray count data for the taxonomic study of Muraenidae.

The results show that caudal-fin rays counts (CR) of 42 species are similar, 6.3±0.4. The 38 Muraeninae species have 378.7±60.2 dorsal-fin ray counts (DR). Pesudechidna brummeri is the highest, 562.5±19.5. Enchelycore pardalis is the lowest, 285.0±0.0. The average anal-fin ray counts (AR) is 251.3±40.1. Enchelycore lichenosa is the highest, 322.0±0.0. Gymnomuraena zebra is the lowest, 136.0±11.0. The 4 Uropterygiinae species have 41.2±17.6 DR. Uropterygius macrocephalus is the highest, 61.2±4.7. Scuticaria tigrina is the lowest, 23.0±0.0. The AR is 33.3±13.3. Uropterygius oligospondylus is the highest, 47.0±0.0. Uropterygius micropterus is the lowest, 20.0±1.0.

Of the 42 muraenid species, total vertebrae minus predorsal vertebrae (TV-PDV) is 2.8±0.2 times in DR. Gymnothorax margaritophorus is the highest, 3.3. Uropterygius micropterus is the lowest, 2.2. The total vertebrae minus preanal vertebrae (TV-PAV) is 3.1±0.3 times in AR. Gymnothorax zonipectis is the highest, 3.8. Uropterygius micropterus is the lowest, 2.2. AR is 1.5±0.2 times in DR.
